Where others see a bridge, the Canadian percussionist Michael Gambacurta discovered an idiophone – a musical instrument whose own substance produces sound with a vibrant tone.

The Kaiserlei Bridge, which spans over the Main River between Frankfurt and Offenbach, is a soundboard tuned by traffic, wind and weather - an endless concert, endless variations of a theme.

Together with composer Matthias S. Krüger, Michael Gambacurta created a Concert-Hommage that allows us to hear with the ears of the brigde: Autophones.

Now the bridge comes home!

The Autophones CD has the 8 Minute Autophones Concert and the 24 Minute Autophones Loop. This is a Hybrid CD with an additional Enhanced Podcast "Bridge Tour" - Michael Gambacurta exposes some of the original bridge sounds with photos plus an interview with sound-artist Jodi Rose. The Booklet includes a bridge tour map for the Podcast.

From September 19th to September 21st, 2008, Autophones was presented as an audiovisual installation in a container vis-à-vis the Kaiserlei Bridge as part of the Festival Junger Talente at the Offenbach Harbour.

In cooperation with Radio x (FM 91.8 in Frankfurt), where the composition and excerpts were broadcasted daily, "Autophones Radio" would go on to be part of RadiaLx Radio Art Festival (Lisbon, Sept 22nd till Sept 28th).

Autophones is a project by Michael Gambacurta (concept/composition), Matthias S. Krüger (composition) and Yuki Higashino (visual design).

Wo andere eine Brücke sehen, entdeckt der Percussionist Michael Gambacurta ein Idiophon – ein selbstklingendes Instrument, welches als Ganzes schwingend Töne und Geräusche vielfältigster Art erzeugt: die Kaiserleibrücke über den Main zwischen Frankfurt und Offenbach, Autobahn A661. Sie bildet den Resonanzkörper für die Fahrgeräusche der unzähligen Autos und Lastwagen, die sie tagtäglich überrollen. Die Struktur der Kaiserleibrücke selbst und Geräusche der Umgebung kommen zum Klingen.

Aus diesen Klängen, die von verschiedenen Stellen der Brücke mit Kontaktmikrophonen aufgenommen wurden, schuf der Performancekünstler Michael Gambacurta zusammen mit dem Komponisten Matthias S. Krüger eine radiophone Klanginstallation. Hier werden die Ohren sowohl auf die Brücke als auch kreuz und quer über sie geführt.

Die "Autophones" CD beinhaltet das 8-Minuten Autophones Concert und das 24-Minuten Autophones Loop. Als besonderes Angebot ist es eine Hybrid CD, wo ein zusätzliches Enhanced Podcast “Brückenrundgang” drauf ist – Michael Gambacurta zeigt Details über das Projekt und die unterschiedliche Klangestellen der Brücke plus Fotos und ein Interview mit der Klangkünstlerin Jodi Rose. Das Booklet hat ein Führungplan zum Podcast.

Zusammen ist es einem richtige LP, ein ganzes Album.

Die original Klanginstallation war in einem Container, der im Hafen Offenbach in Sichtweite der Kaiserleibrücke aufgestellt war, im Rahmen des Festival Junger Talente vom 19. – 21.09. zu erleben. Durch die bereitgestellten Kopfhörer, über welche die Komposition läuft, wird die Brücke den Hörern förmlich ans Ohr gelegt, eine Diashow und Teleskope ermöglichen es, die Brücke auch visuell zu fokussieren.

Eine Kooperation mit Radio x (FM 91,8 in Frankfurt) wo die Komposition und Ausschnitte daraus mehrfach gesendet war, erweitert die Installation um eine weitere, entscheidende Komponente: Autofahrer haben die Möglichkeit, den Klängen der Brücke zu lauschen, während sie die Brücke selbst befahren.
