Program Notes:

Chairs (2007)
The equal positioning of a dancer and musician was the core idea behind “Chairs.” This short film takes the banal scene of two people sitting across from each other, where communication is found through sound production from the consequence of a movement.

This is part of the DVD, “Klang Körper Sequenzen” funded through Tanz der Künste (HfMDK Frankfurt)

Lea Hartlaub, camera & edit
Paula Rosolen, performers & concept
Michael Gambacurta, performers, concept & sound design

Blickzeichen for marimba (2003)
Taking the German word’s speech rhythm, the opening chords of “Blickzeichen” come as a signal and eventually interrupt the piece. This marimba solo contrasts the entire register of the instrument and includes extended marimba techniques like the mandolin tremolo and dead strokes. “Blickzeichen” was premiered by the composer in March 2003.

Sorry, Please Dial 237 for Solo Snare and Chamber Ensemble (2002)
From the American tradition of the rudimental snare drum, a Canadian can’t go without a joke with a telephone operator referring to the piece’s rhythmic proportioning of 2:3:7.

Accompanied by B flat Clarinet, Bass Trombone, Viola and Cello, there is also an arrangement for solo snare and accordion. The new music ensemble, the OFFENSIVE Love Consort premiered it at the University of Toronto Snare Drum Olympics IV.

Kissing Cousins - rudimental snare solo (2002)
Packed with over a dozen rudiments, this virtuosic snare drum solo in arch form was written for and premiered at the University of Toronto Snare Drum Olympics IV.
